Today's Featured Business Profile: Lips Unlimited!
As winter comes, so do chapped lips. It's just the way life is for thousands of Americans. In fact, Americans spend over $200 million a year on lip balm products. The most popular brands are Chap Stick and Blistex; however, it might not be long before you hear of Lips Unlimited!
Lips Unlimited! was developed by sisters, Megan and Emma. Megan is eleven years old and Emma is nine. Together they create and sell their high quality beeswax lip balm to the public.
Their story began when Auntie Dana and Uncle Skip sent them a lip balm and soap making kit for Christmas. They enjoyed using it so much that they decided to start a business. With their Dad's help they determined how much it would cost to produce and at what cost they would have to sell to make a profit.
Next they had to design labels and create order forms. They even named their different flavors using very descriptive adjectives like Awesome Apple, Groovy Grapefruit, and Tangy Tangerine.
WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF PLANNING THE BUSINESS?
"Even though our dad helped us with our business plan, the most difficult part was the time it took to research the cost of all the ingredients and deciding what would make our lip balm better than the competition."
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FUN PART ABOUT THE BUSINESS?
"The best part of our business is getting to go to craft fairs and shows to sell our lip balm. We also really enjoy putting orders together. "
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG PERSON WHO WANTS TO OWN A BUSINESS?
"We learned how important it is to be outgoing instead of shy; we sold a lot more when we interacted with the people passing by our booth."
The sisters even set up a website.
